Halifax MUA Favourites - PART 2 - MAKEUP

Meghan Lawlor

Ok everyone, here it is – Part 2 of our Expert Shopping List! Thank you so much to those of you who checked out the last one, I hope you found it enjoyable and helpful if you were looking for skincare products but weren’t sure where to start. If you haven’t read that one yet check it out here. In case you missed it, I asked a few local makeup artists that I love to share some of their favourite beauty products. Last weekend was skincare, this week it’s MAKEUP! I love skincare, but makeup will always be my favourite part of the beauty process!

Since it's Friday before a long weekend here in Halifax, I’m really hoping people will be looking for a distraction from their work so let’s not delay. And as I mentioned before, make sure to go show these Halifax makeup artists some love by following them! They are linked below and throughout.

There were a few products that were mentioned more than once. Since the bulk of this group are MAC artists or former MAC artists it was no surprise some of the old favourites showed up on our list. MAC Studio Fix Powder, and Studio Fix Fluid were mentioned for their great colour range, and ease of use. I keep both of these in my collection as well as my kit since they work so well on almost any skin type.

Brandy Marien mentioned a product that pairs well with Studio Fix PowderThe Lancome Skin Feels so Good Tinted Moisturizer. Brandy likes this because it blurs and plumps the skin and is a great sticky base for Studio Fix Powder. I believe her exact words were “Does anything get better than Studio Fix Powder?”. I personally haven’t found a powder foundation that works as well for me as that one, if anyone has heard of a good one comment down below, we always want to try new things!

Megan Morrison mentioned one of my favourites – the Laura Mercier Loose Translucent Setting Powder. This is a holy grail to so many people. Megan says “this power is the bomb because it’s super lightweight, and suits every skin tone (they have both dark and light options)”. She also mentioned a fairly new product that’s getting a lot of attention  “the MAC Fix + Matte for me is a MUST! Especially if you don’t want to add a powder, it’s like a liquid translucent powder!” I completely agree with you on both Meg!

I decided any primers mentioned could be added with the makeup portion of this blog, since we really only wear primer to prepare the skin for makeup. Janine Gerrits loves the “Dr. Brandt Pores No More Luminizer Primer. My skin is normal/combination and while I love dewy skin, I find most primers add too much moisture and end up breaking down my foundation early on. This gives me glow, smoothes the skin, and makes my foundation last all day! It also smells like lavender, so I can say I’m obsessed with this one!”…..Ok I’ll take 3 please….

Naphtali Carleton loves the Marc Jacobs Highliner Eye Gel Crayon. “I’m obsessed with the rich colour payoff! This pencil glides on effortlessly and has a true waterproof, 12 hour stay power. It’s free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and is cruelty free”. I love Naphtali’s natural approach to makeup so I’m sure I would love this, also Marc Jacobs is my husband (obviously kidding but I wish I wasn’t). Naphtali also mentioned the Kat Von D Shade + Light Face Contour Palette. She says it “caters to warm, neutral, and cool tones. The powder formula has a silky and buildable quality to it so you can easily blend this product for a seamless look. I love that you can refill the shades! It’s free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and is cruelty free”. I’ve heard about this contour palette a few times and so I guess I have to buy it now. You guys I have a problem.

Angela Hix mentioned another MAC favourite of mine “MAC Prolongwear Concealer is the only thing to hide my under eye discolouration. A thin layer keeps it as creaseless as possible when set with a lightweight translucent powder that doesn’t move all day”. Her favourite eye primers are MAC Vibrancy Eye (used under the eye) and MAC 24 Hour Eye Base for the lid to prime for eyeshadow. Angela was the only person to mention a mascara, “the Buxom Lash Volumizing Mascara is perfect or full but separated lashes. The hourglass applicator fills but lifts the lashes to separate then making lashes appear fuller and longer but fans them out for a beautiful romanticized look”.

I’ll finish off with my current favourite makeup products – which are two foundations that I mix together. Foundation is something I would never live without given the choice and when I find foundations that feel lightweight, contain SPF, and cover my breakouts and scarring I have to mention them. Lately I have been loving the Marc Jacobs Remarkable Foundation mixed with my It Cosmetics CC Cream.  I love the matte coverage I get from the MJ foundation, and I love the lightweight hydrating texture of the CC cream. This combination was born out of necessity when I realized I was too dark for one and too light for the other (pale people summer problems). I love mixing foundations, but really didn’t think these two would work together at all. Turns out it’s the best combination ever! I would highly recommend both of them on their own and together.

This brings us to the end of our Expert Round Up, Round 2. I seriously loved reading everyone’s favourite products and hope to do more blogs like this in the future! Let me know in the comments below what you guys think about these products! Have you tried them, hate them, love them? Let us know!
