My Favourite Lipsticks for Brides

Meghan Lawlor

I hope you all had an amazing summer! I’ve been full on with weddings on the weekends so I’ve been having a great season this year. I have been getting a lot of questions about lipstick from my brides this year so I thought I would share my favourite colours that I keep in my kit! As a disclaimer these are all MAC because MAC has the Back to MAC recycling program where you trade in six empty MAC containers (anything plastic, metal or glass) for a free lipstick. Where I have so many empty MAC containers from working there (and being a regular customer for the last 15 years), it makes sense to use free lipstick rather than spending money. That said, they are also some of my favourite go-to colours and because I worked there I’m lucky to have a good understanding of which colours work for a person and which ones won’t work.

First is the most used lip colour in my kit: Brave by MAC. This is the perfect neutral medium pink for a light-skinned person. I find that this compliments so many clients no matter their tones, and it’s great for wedding makeup because it’s kind of like a “your lip but better” colour. So when you kiss your significant other you won’t get a glossy dark colour all over him or her. It’s also a great satin texture which isn’t drying but stays on as well as a matte. If you end up buying this colour then it can be used afterward as your daytime lipstick!

The next most used lipstick in my kit is Velvet Teddy by MAC. This warm-toned- peachy nude is a great colour for light-skinned brides who want something a bit more than a whitish- nude. If your eye makeup has a lot of warm tones this is usually what I will reach for, it’s a matte texture but I find it’s closer to a satin because it’s not super drying. It stays on so so so well and also won’t tattoo your significant other during your photos and kissing games.

For medium skinned brides I like to use Twig by MAC if they are looking for a cool toned “your lip but better” look. This colour looks great on everyone and I would describe it as a neutral brownish pink. This has similar tones as Brave however it’s got a bit more purple in it and really looks great on everyone. I often use this colour for Mother’s of the Bride and Groom. It’s an easy colour to wear for so many people.

Amourous by MAC is also very well used and I often use this on medium to darker skin clients who want something that’s not too in your face. I would call this colour a neutral plum shade. I do use this on MOBs and MOGs as well, however it is often darker than most people are looking for if they have lighter skin.

The thing I love about wedding makeup is that it really does bring out your natural beauty so the colours used are often more complimentary to your skin and features rather than eye catching. It’s all about looking like a polished version of yourself!

If you have a bolder style and you want to rock a red lip, my favourites by far are Ruby Woo and Russian Red both by MAC. Ruby Woo is more of a blue toned red and can look more cherryish. Russian Red is more neutral however some people find it looks orange, which I personally love but not everyone is into. I can’t get enough warm tones, but I love both. I find choosing my own lipstick can really depend on my mood but that’s a whole other blog!

I hope you guys enjoyed this quick little post and found it helpful. If you’re doing your makeup yourself on your wedding day, or looking for ideas check out my YouTube Channel. I have a whole series on wedding makeup that I update often.
